Steenbergs Amchur Powder or Green Mango Powder is part of Steenbergs specialist spice range.  Amchoor powder is a key ingredient in Indian cuisine and is used as an acidulant within Indian cuisine, so you might come across it as an ingredient in recipes for curries; if you cannot get amchoor, using lemon juice will do the trick and has already been substituted into many recipe books. Steenbergs amchur powder comes from the dried unripe fruit of the mango tree - hence dried green mango powder and and derives its name from the Hindi and Urdu, where Am means mango and choor means powder.  Amchur has a warm aroma that has a tart fruitiness to it and a fizzy, tingly, acidic mouthfeel like a tart unripe apple that is fresh and lively with a certain acidity compared to the warming sweetness of a newly plucked ripe apple.

The mango tree is a tropical evergreen tree that grows to a tall 40 metres (130 ft) in height and lives a good life of about 100 years.  Mango trees grow in tropical and subtropical parts of the world mainly on the Indian subcontinent.  Imagine a dense canopy of large shiny leaves above a massive grey tree trunk and then the sweet aromas of the luscious golden ripe fruits, giving the fecund and lush sights and smells of tropical climes; I particularly love a mango lassi.  Amchoor powder, however, is a sour spice that comes from picking unripe mangoes, which are dried to a light brown colour, with a rough texture.  These slices of dried green mango are then ground to a fine powder which has a beige-like colour; if it is more yellow than this, you might find it has some turmeric powder added for colour.  For more information on amchoor, try Gernot Katzer's Spice Pages.
