The pomegranate is one of the world's mystical fruits and is shrouded in legends that have often shaped history - one even claims it was the fruit Eve used to seduce Adam in the Garden of Eden. Paris started the Trojan War by handing Aphrodite a pomegranate. Since then the pomegranate has been a symbol of life and fertility. Pomegranates have been grown for over 5,000 years and is thus one of the oldest plants known to mankind. The name "pomegranate" derives from latin pomum (apple ) and granatus (seeded).

These organic Fairtrade pomegranates are grown by small farmer groups in the Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The pomegranates are harvested by hand when fully ripe and on the very same day cleaned by hand and carefully dried at the Pearls of Samarkand processing plant. It takes 1 kg of fresh organic pomegranates to produce 100g of organic dried pomegranates - a ration of 1:10.
