Steenbergs Organic Spearmint is full of that pleasing light and fresh minty flavour that you expect from spearmint.  Organic spearmint not as antiseptic or overpowering as organic peppermint can be.  Organic spearmint is used for seasoned lamb or for jellies. Steenbergs organic spearmint makes salads and tabouli delightfully refreshing. Organic spearmint also works fantastically in lentil or pea soup.

The mint family covers a wide array of varieties with spearmint being the most used species for culinary purposes.  Spearmint, Mentha spicata, is hardy perennial that has mid to light green colour and fairly low growing (45-60cm or 18-24 inches).  Spearmint leaves are green pointed and serrated - like a spear hence the name - and it has purple flowers in the summer and which are borne in clusters on cylindrical spires.  Spearmint has a distinctive sweet minty aroma and a pleasing light minty taste, which is not too pungent.  Spearmint leaves are generally harvested just before flowering when most of the photosynthetic energy has been used to create the leaves and wonderful flavours of the minty volatile oils, predominantly menthol.  Dried leaves have almost as much flavour as fresh ones, especially when used in cooking or herbal teas.  For more, take a look at Wikipedia.

Fresh mint is popular in the UK and northern Europe, but across the eastern Mediterranean and into Arab countries dried spearmint is more popular.  so dried spearmint is used in Greece for keftedes and stuffed vine leaves, while the Turkish cacik is best with dried mint.  Try spearmint with lentil soups or lamb and vegetable casseroles.  For some cooking ideas try the BBC website.

Organic spearmint is part of the Steenbergs range of over 400 organic spices, peppers, herbs and flavoured sugars, as well as organic teas and organic hot chocolates and organic stuffing mixes.
