Myrrh Resin

Steenbergs Myrrh is best known as being one of the three gifts from the Wise Men to Jesus and Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh have become an intrinsic part of the Christmas story.  It was used as a medicine in the time of Solomon and is still used in the Middle East and China - myrrh is especually used as an astringent tonic, to dress wounds and sore lips and goes into some toothpastes and liniments, as well as in making incense and perfume.

Steenbergs Myrrh is a pleasant smelling gum-resin with a sharp, bitter and aromatic taste.  The myrrh tree - Commiphora myrrha - from the bark of which it exudes in oily drops of reddish-yellow colour, is a kind of balsam, a small scrubby shrub, with green flowers and very little foliage, growing in Arabia, Persia, Ethiopia and Africa.  The best myrrh probably comes from Somalia.

Common myrrh, Commiphora myrrha, is a large shrub that grows to about 3 metres (9ft).  Its branches are knotted with branchlets that are pointed and perpendicular to the main branches.  The trofolitae leaves are small and scanty, and are shed in the dry season.  Myrrh has a whitish-grey bark that is filled with myrrh resin reservoirs, from which the resin is tapped by making 10cm (5 inches) incisions in the bark.  As the fresh resin comes into contact with the air, it hardens into tears.  Myrrh has a reddish-brown colour, is hard to touch and has little aroma, but a mildly balsamic base note.  Myrrh burns readily with little smoke and gives off a white and pleasantly pungent aroma that is not as heady as frankincense.  For more on myrhh, you could read my blog A Little Bit About Myrrh or look at Wikipedia.
