Accreditations

Steenbergs is a relatively small and uncomplicated business and we operate in a way that we want to build trust with our employees, customers and suppliers. We are regulated and audited by a wide range of organisations that validate that we do operate in the way that we say we do. Overall, we are audited by more than enough external agencies for the scale of our business activities.

Ethics & Fairness

Being fair and reasonable in how we conduct ourselves within our business is a core value for Steenbergs. To show our commitment to these principles, we are Fairtrade and BCorp. Steenbergs has been Fairtrade certified and audited since 2004 and BCorp since 2022. Steenbergs FLO ID is 2984. Its BCorp details can be found at the BCorp directory with its latest score 103.4.

Organic & Sustainability

Being sustainable is a core value of Steenbergs, so organic farming and processing is fundamental for us. Steenbergs has been certified organic with the Organic Food Federation since 2003. It has an extensive list of over 300 spices, herbs, seasonings and teas that are certified as organic under its licence 00595. Steenbergs is audited annually to check that its operations meet the UK's organic regulations.

Vegan & Vegetarian

Steenbergs is a vegan business, so all its products are vegan and vegetarian. Indeed, most of its spices, herbs and teas are simply dried plant seeds or leaves, so the pure plant product that has had minimal processing. We've registered a limited number of our lines with The Vegan Society, mainly the extracts, which are more processed, and also black peppercorns, ginger and cinnamon.

Food Safety & Trading Standards

Steenbergs operates to and meets the SALSA Standards and is audited annually by them. SALSA Standards are food safety standards for smaller businesses that demonstrate that an operators systems and products meet food law and are suitable for sale in the UK and Ireland. These standards are over and above the supervision that government inspectors provide. In terms of UK Government Regulators, Steenbergs is registered, visited and approved by officers from North Yorkshire Council.

Kosher

Many of Steenbergs products are registered and certified as Kosher Pareve by KLBD Kasrut Division London Beth Din with ID 4550, and we are subject to annual audit. Our list of kosher lines is extensive for spices, herbs, blends, extracts and teas. If you require kosher products, please enquire because we do not display a logo showing the kosher status for most of our products.

Steenbergs has the following additional certifications:

  • For environmental systems, Steenbergs is audited under BS 8555:2016 and certified under by Tarian Inspection under their Seren Scheme. Its company number under this audit scheme is SER/LLO/246.
  • For ethical transparency, Steenbergs shares details about how it operates on SEDEX but at this stage is not audited by them because of our small scale, but when the time comes we will submit ourselves to a SMETA. Its company number is ZC1049822.
  • For Environmental Social Governance, Steenbergs shares details on Ideagen Supply Chain. This is another of the many systems out there, but is more for bigger businesses than Steenbergs.
