Steenbergs Organic Nutmeg

Steenbergs Organic Nutmeg is a classic spice of any kitchen. Its aroma is warm, aromatic and gently pleasing, while its flavour is also warming but has some sweetness.

Steenbergs sources premium organic nutmeg from Sri Lanka that we pack down in small batches.

The spice comes from the nutmeg tree, Myristica fragrans. Nutmeg trees are a tropical evergreen tree that grow up to 10 metres high. When the fruit has developed, it looks like a yellow nectarine. When ripe, the fruit is picked and the flesh cut off the shell, making sure the shiny, blood-red mace on the outside is not damaged. First, the mace is peeled from the nutmeg shell, this spice is mace. Then, the nut is removed from the shell. This is the nutmeg which is dull brown, wrinkled and hard.

Food Pairing: Use nutmeg in Indian curries, sprinkled over spinach, to flavour the white sauce in lasagne or rice puddings or junket. Grate a little over your coffee for a robust spiciness.
