Why Nature Is at the Heart of the New Look Steenbergs

A brighter look, but the same values we’ve had since 2003
You might have noticed Steenbergs website looking rather more colourful lately.
Our spice jars changed first. Then our extracts and flower waters. Our teas followed. And now our new website brings everything together. It has taken a while.
But then, the point was never simply to make Steenbergs look different. We wanted what you see on the outside to better reflect what has always mattered to us on the inside.
Nature. Flavour. Organic ingredients. People. And doing business in a way we can stand behind.
When Sophie and Axel started Steenbergs in North Yorkshire in 2003, they wanted to find really good spices, herbs and teas – and source them in a way that respected both people and the environment.
More than 20 years later, that remains the basis of the business. We are certified organic and have been since 2003. We were one of the pioneers of Fairtrade spices and helped develop Fairtrade standards for the category. We became a certified B Corp in 2022. Steenbergs
But certifications only really matter if the thinking behind them becomes part of everyday decisions.
Organic isn’t an added extra
Spices, herbs and teas begin with plants. So soil, water, biodiversity and farming aren’t peripheral environmental issues for Steenbergs. They’re part of where our ingredients – and therefore our flavours – come from. That’s one reason organic has always been fundamental to us.
We want to work with natural systems rather than treating nature as an unlimited resource. We also want ingredients that haven’t been filled out with unnecessary additives or artificial flavours. Good ingredients should be allowed to taste of themselves.
Treading more lightly
That same thinking follows the ingredients back to North Yorkshire. Over the years we’ve invested in measures including solar power and rainwater harvesting, worked to reduce waste and plastic, and become carbon neutral.
Our environmental work also extends beyond the factory. Steenbergs has invested in woodland in South Wales, including native tree planting and biodiversity monitoring, with the aim of supporting nature as well as capturing carbon.
There’s always more to do. Sustainability isn’t something we regard as finished. It’s a direction of travel.
So why the new look?
For years, we knew what Steenbergs stood for, but we weren’t convinced our packaging really showed it.
We wanted more colour, more life and a stronger sense of the landscapes and natural ingredients behind our products. That’s why nature now runs so visibly through the Steenbergs identity – from the plants and wildlife appearing across our tea boxes to the brighter colours throughout the range.
It isn’t a new story invented for new packaging. It’s the old Steenbergs story finally becoming easier to see.
Bold flavours from nature, sourced with care for people and our planet.
That’s what we set out to do in 2003.
And it’s still what we’re trying to do today.
