Organic Chives have a mild onion flavour. Steenbergs sources the highest quality Organic Chives from continental Europe that we can find.
Chives give a fresh oniony taste to salads, yoghurt dressings and egg dishes without the ‘recurring tastes and memories’ that some get from garlic and onion. Chives give a hint of garden herb freshness to omelettes, chicken soup, baked potatoes, and vegetables, or add to cottage cheese or potato salad.
Axel’s Tasting Notes: Herbal; Fresh, herbal with definite hints of garlic and onion.
More about Chives
The chive is a well-known member of the onion group, Allium schoenoprasum. It was introduced into Britain by the Romans, but is recorded in ancient Chinese writings 2500 years ago.
Chives are a small grass like hardy perennial about 15 – 30 cm high. They are similar to onions. They have wonderful lilac-coloured pompom flowers and upright bottom leaves – their big brothers and sisters – make dramatic statements in herbaceous borders around the UK.
Chives flourish in the cooler climates of the northern hemisphere and are grown commercially in Germany, UK and Scandinavia.
