Product Description

Steenbergs Organic Coriander Seeds are small light brown oval seeds. They have a mellow aroma and flavour that’s gently woody with notes of sweetness and citrus. Coriander seeds are really versatile and used in both sweet and savoury dishes.

Steenbergs sources premium organic Coriander Seeds we can find, which are packed down in small batches in North Yorkshire for optimum freshness.

Cooks use a lot more coriander than they do for other spices because it is a mild, forgiving spice that pulls the flavours together more than bringing its own taste to a meal. Coriander Seeds are great in curries, often toasted to change its flavour profile, or added to casseroles or used for making pickles like a tasty chutney.

Axel’s Tasting Notes: Amalgamating; sweet, woody, mild.  Dry roasting results in a more robust curry flavour, adding a certain nuttiness to their character.

Food Pairing: Carrots, peas, potatoes, fish, chicken stews, ham, pork, apples, pickling spices.

More about Coriander Seeds

Coriander, Coriandrum sativum, is an annual herb that grows to about 80 cm high. The leaves are dark-green and fan-shaped, a bit like the flat Italian parsley.

The flowers of the coriander plant are white or pinky-mauve, small and umbrella shaped. After flowering, the coriander plant produces the seeds that become the spice.

The coriander seeds are small, almost spherical, 5 mm in diameter and have 12 characteristic ribs that run lengthways down these spheres.

Coriander seeds fall into 2 types:

  • Asia Minor seeds are light-tan to pale-brown and have a lemony aroma and taste.
  • Indian seeds are smaller, often darker brown, and taste less of citrus and more sage-like and herby in flavour.

When ripe, coriander seeds have a distinctive sweet citrus-minty-musty aroma.
