Steenbergs Organic Fenugreek Seeds are the golden-brown and relatively hard seeds. The aroma is spicy and sharp, while the flavour is mildly bitter and like eating peas. Use fenugreek seeds in curries, chutneys and baking, especially of flat breads. We find that they help with digestion of lentils, so add them ground to dhals.
Steenbergs sources the highest quality organic Fenugreek Seeds we can find and pack them down in small amounts to maintain freshness.
Fenugreek seeds are small, heavy seeds that have a dried pea-like aroma and a flavour that’s likewise leguminous and bitter. Roasting fenugreek seeds accentuates the bitterness and releases additional nutty, burnt sugar flavours as well. Use fenugreek seeds in curries, especially fish and vegetable curries, or grind down and use in a hot vindaloo.
Axel’s Tasting Notes: Pungent: bitter and like dried peas, slightly nutty.
Food Pairing: Fish curries, green and root vegetables, lamb, lentils. essential to Panch Phoron.
More about Fenugreek Seeds
Fenugreek, Trigonella foenum-graceum, is a small, upright annual herb from the pea family.
The fenugreek plant has light green leaves with three small, oblong leaves. The leaves are the herbs methi or Fenugreek Leaves. The flowers are yellowish-white and 10 – 15 cm long fruits that like other legumes forms a pod with 10 – 20 seeds, a bit like a miniature broad bean pod.
To harvest fenugreek, the whole plants are uprooted and left out to dry in the sun. They are threshed and then the seeds are dried further to around 10% moisture levels.
Fenugreek seeds are like small hard pieces of triangular gravel (3 – 5 mm long); the fenugreek seeds are golden brown in colour.
The aroma is mild and like dried peas, while the flavour is mildly bitter and also pea-like, or perhaps more like those dried broad beans.
