Steenbergs Organic Galangal Ground

Organic Galangal Ground is a specialist spice used in Southeast Asian cooking. It is a light tan powder with a look and feel similar to ginger. It is sharper and more nasal than ginger, perhaps with hints of lemon.

Steenbergs sources premium organic Galangal from South East Asia. Organic galangal looks like ginger powder and has a gingery taste but is sharper, nose-penetrating in its aroma with a hot, clean, biting flavour.

Galangal is used in Thai cuisine like red and green curries as well as other dishes from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

More about Galangal

Steenbergs galangal comes from the greater galangal plant, Alpinia galanga, part of the ginger family.

Greater Galangal is a tropical plant with ginger-like rhizomes and blade-like, green leaves. It grows to about 2 m tall and has greenish-white, orchid-shaped flowers with dark-red veined tips.

It is the rhizomes that are the source for galangal powder. These are knobbly, underground, root-bearing stems with a thin light brown skin like ginger hands. Inside, the flesh is a pale-yellow.

To harvest, the galangal rhizomes are simply lifted, cleaned and for dried galangal, dried, sliced then ground.
