Product Description

Juniper Berries are medium sized, slate blue berries. Their flavour reminds you of gin. They go well with rich gamey and fatty foods, for example venison, pheasant and rabbit.

Steenbergs sources premium organic Juniper from Europe. The berries are slightly soft and blue-black. They have a woody, piney, resinous and gin-like smell and flavour that freshens up gamey and fatty foods.

Axel’s Tasting Notes: Juniper is Pungent: gin-like, pine-like, spicy, refreshing, savoury.

Food Pairing: Venison, duck, goose, pheasant, pork, gin. Also, lamb and fish.

More about Juniper

Juniper berries come from a tree, Juniperus communis, which grows up to 12 m in height.

Juniper trees are compact and slightly scrappy looking. Their leaves are greeny-gray and needle-like.  Juniper flowers are small greenish-yellow flowers that are about 10 mm in diameter.

The berries begin as green and hard berries and they ripen to fleshy, blue-black berries, containing sticky, hard brown seeds. They are hand picked, then dried.

On drying, the berries stay soft and blue-black; the aroma and flavour is reminiscent of gin and is piney and resinous.
