Product Description

Organic Nigella Seeds are small black seeds. They have a nutty and slightly smoky, peppery flavour, together with a crunchy texture. Organic Nigella is popular in Indian cooking, but mostly found in naan breads or on Jewish rye bread.

Nigella is, also, called black caraway, black cumin, black seed, black onion seed, charnushka or kalonji.

Steenbergs sources premium organic Nigella that we pack in small batches in North Yorkshire, ensuring the freshest flavours. Organic nigella is a deep black colour with an earthy, nutty flavour that adds a nice crunchy bite to Indian dishes.

Axel’s Tasting Notes: Nutty, oily aroma and nigella’s flavour is sharp, nutty, metallic with a lingering pepperiness.

Food Pairing: Nigella can be added to bread, Indian naan breads or sprinkled over salads.

More about Nigella:

Nigella comes from the annual plant, Nigella sativa. It grows up to 60 cm high. It has wispy, grey-green leaves and blue or white small flowers.

Nigella produces spiky capsules like poppy seed heads. When the seeds are ripe, they break and disperse loads of tiny, jet-black seeds. Nigella seeds are angular, tear-shaped seeds of 3mm in length with a creamy centre.

To harvest the seeds, the seed capsules are harvested prior to ripening, then when dried they are threshed to remove the seeds.
