Product Description

Steenbergs Sichuan Pepper is classic Sichuan pepper from China. Sichuan Pepper is peppery, warm, fragrant and has a lingering, numbing sensation on the tongue like a mild anaesthetic. It is packing by hand in small batches in North Yorkshire for maximum freshness and flavour.

The key part of Sichuan pepper is its husk and not the seeds, which can be gritty. So, you should discard the twigs and seeds as best you can and use the shells only. Roasting or dry-frying enhances its flavours.

Sichuan pepper is popular in Chinese Five spice mixes, Japanese shichimi-togarashi or you can mix with black pepper, ginger and star anise and rub onto meats before cooking.

Axel’s Tasting Notes: Sichuan Pepper – Aroma: Intense lemon-lime and kumquat, that becomes enchantingly floral and woody incense. Flavour: Starts with pepper and ripe citrus, then tangy and bittersweet, with a lingering fresh tingling, numbing sensation on the tongue.

Food pairing: Chinese cuisine. Pan-fried green asparagus, French beans, duck or goose pâté, turbot, beef casserole, roast duck and pork, fried chicken wings, chocolate fudge cake, pineapple, strawberries.
