All About Rose Water – And Why Ours Contains Just Two Ingredients

Our bestselling Organic Rose Water

Open a bottle of our Organic Rose Water and the first thing you’ll notice is the scent.

Softly floral and fresh rather than overly perfumed, it comes from organic Persian Damask roses grown in Bulgaria and has become one of those ingredients that Steenbergs customers return to again and again.

In fact, it’s our bestselling product.

What’s actually in Steenbergs Organic Rose Water?

This is the easy bit. Water and organic rose petal extracts.

That’s all.

There are no added sugars, preservatives, colours or artificial flavours.

The roses are distilled using a traditional water extraction process to capture their distinctive aroma and flavour.

For us, that simplicity matters. We want ingredients to taste like the things they’re made from, with as little unnecessary intervention as possible. It is an approach that runs throughout Steenbergs, from our organic spices and teas to our flower waters and extracts.

How do you use rose water?

Rose water has a long history in Persian and Middle Eastern cooking, and a little can completely change a dish.

Its floral character works particularly beautifully with pistachio, cardamom, almonds, citrus, berries, chocolate and vanilla.

Try adding a small amount to:

  • cakes and biscuits
  • ice cream and yoghurt
  • fruit salads
  • chocolate puddings
  • syrups and desserts
  • homemade Turkish delight.

The trick is to start gently. Rose is a distinctive flavour and often only a few drops are needed.

One of our favourite ways to use it is in peppermint, vanilla, rose water and lemon Turkish delight. It also features in our Persian halva, where its fragrance feels completely at home alongside the other ingredients.

An ancient ingredient for today’s kitchen

We sometimes talk about ingredients becoming fashionable, but rose water rather disproves the idea.  People have cooked with it for centuries.

What changes is how we use it. A bottle that might once have been bought for one traditional recipe is now finding its way into contemporary baking, puddings, drinks and all sorts of kitchen experiments.

And we rather like that.

Our Organic Rose Water is vegan and Kosher certified and made with the same emphasis on organic ingredients, flavour and responsible sourcing that has shaped Steenbergs since Sophie and Axel founded the company in 2003.

Two ingredients. An extraordinary fragrance. And rather more uses than you might initially imagine.
