Product Description

Steenbergs Organic Blue Poppy Seeds come from Papaver somniferum, the same plant used for opium. They’re tiny blue-black round seeds with a mildly nutty taste.

Poppy Seeds are mostly used in baking, sprinkled over breads and cakes. At Steenbergs, we include them in our Everything Bagel Seasoning.

After the opium has been harvested, the seeds form in the pods. These are harvested when the heads become ripe and before they burst open. The dry seeds are the blue poppy seeds for cooking. Some seeds are pressed to make the French oil called olivette.

Blue poppy seeds have a pretty slate blue colour, a sweet smell and taste slightly nutty with a crunchy bite. Blue poppy seeds are used decoratively in baking, especially on the top of buns like my favourite bap, a Bayerische Semmeln, or in sweet pastries.

Axel’s Tasting Notes: Blue Poppy Seeds are Amalgamating: sweet, mild and slightly nutty.

Food Pairing: Bagels, bread rolls, pastries, sprinkled over aubergines, courgettes and French beans.
