  • Steenbergs Organic Zhug is a hotter style Harissa that comes from the Yemen.
  • It’s our dry-spice version of this classic hot and spicy chilli sauce.
  • It’s sometimes called skhug or kharif.
  • Often found as a condiment for felafel at street vendors in the Middle East.
  • Usually comes as a paste. To make a paste, add 1 tablespoon of water to 1 tablespoon of Zhug, then blend to a paste, then add a little olive oil for additional flavour. Now, you’ve got a nice liquidy red peppery sauce that’s perfect for dipping.

  • Great used like Steenbergs Organic Dukkah as a dip for pitta bread together with a cool bottle of white wine sitting out in the sunshine – I wish.
  • Zhug is basically a core of heat from Chilli, Paprika and Black Pepper with the earthiness of Caraway and Cumin.
  • Then, there’s the aromatics from Cardamom.
  • There’s a sprinkling of a Salt to enhance the flavours.
