Steenbergs Organic Speculoos Spices

Steenbergs Organic Speculoos Spices is a premium spice mix for Festive Baking. It’s much more versatile though and our blend is great in other baking and for flavouring hot chocolate.

Speculoos, also known as Speculaas or Spekulatius, is a spiced biscuit like Biscoff and has a gingerbread flavour profile. For Axel, it’s Spekulatius and is part of the Christmas baking season. Speculoos is really popular in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, with it being more of a Christmas bake in Germany and Holland whilst it is eaten all year round in Belgium.

Speculoos biscuits have been around for hundreds of years but has only recently gone global, perhaps because its flavours sit really well alongside a coffee. That’s the influence of Biscoff.

Steenbergs Organic Speculoos is a family recipe, with the highly aromatic perfume of cassia at its core, then a little heat from ginger and black pepper. These hotter notes from black pepper and ginger are key to its character. Then, we add some sweet spice depth with anise, cardamom, nutmeg and clove.

Sophie Steenberg’s Comments: ‘The aroma of these biscuits is wonderful, even opening the biscuit tin when they are in there is enough to make your mouth water. Traditionally, they are made in moulds with images such as windmills. So, we were excited to buy one of these moulds on a trip to Bruges. The texture is slightly harder than a normal biscuit and is delicious – a real family favourite.’
