Product Description

Steenbergs organic speculoos spice mix has been created to help you bake these popular biscuits. However, the mix works in other baking and flavouring hot chocolate, for starters.

So if you are new to Speculoos, also known as Speculaas or Spekulatius, it is a spiced biscuit in the gingerbread family of flavours. Speculoos is really popular in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, with it being more a Christmas bake in Germany and Holland but is eaten all year round in Belgium. It’s the origin of the Biscoff biscuit or flavour.

Speculoos biscuits have been around for hundreds of years but has only recently gone global, perhaps because its flavours sit really well alongside a coffee.

Steenbergs organic Speculoos is a family recipe, with cassia at its core, then a little heat from ginger and black pepper, plus the sweet baking flavours of anise, cardamom, nutmeg and clove. A real winner.

Blended and created at the Steenbergs spice factory in rural North Yorkshire.

Sophie Steenberg’s comments on Speculoos: ‘The aroma of these biscuits is wonderful, even opening the biscuit tin when they are in there is enough to make your mouth water. Traditionally they are made in moulds with images such as windmills and we were excited to buy one of these moulds on a recent trip to Belgium. The texture is slightly harder than a normal biscuit and is delicious – a real family favourite.’
