Product Description

Organic Caraway Seeds have a warm, earthy, robust taste with hints of anise, mint and camphor and a mild nuttiness. Steenbergs sources the highest quality Organic Caraway that we can find and pack in small batches here in North Yorkshire.

The distinctive flavour of organic caraway is really popular throughout European cooking. Caraway seeds aid digestion by balancing fatty and rich foods like duck, pork and venison and complement cabbage or pickles like sauerkraut or gherkins. Caraway is popular in cheese across Europe, and we love Dutch gouda with caraway seeds.

Axel’s Tasting Notes: Pungent: initial anise, eucalyptus with hints mint followed by a lingering nuttiness.

More about Caraway

Caraway is a biennial plant that grows about 60 cm high. The plant has pale-green, finely defined leaves on hollow steams. Its flowers are white tinged with pink and umbrella shaped.

To get caraway, complete stalks are harvested and dried for 7 – 10 days before threshing to remove the seeds. The seeds are 5 mm long and they are split into two crescent-shaped, dark-brown seeds.

The Egyptians buried their dead with caraway whilst Isaiah spoke of it in the Bible. Shakespeare wrote about it.
