Russian Caravan Tea 500g Bulk Bag Loose Leaf - Steenbergs details and description
Steenbergs Russian Caravan Tea (loose leaf) is blended at the Steenbergs tea factory in North Yorkshire.
Axel Steenberg (one of the founders of Steenbergs and the key blender)'s uncle used to serve a Russian Caravan Tea from a wooden tea caddy that he had and Axel used to imagine the tea coming all the way from Russia. Actually, it's a blend of teas created from Chinese teas and was meant to evoke the concept of tea that had taken a long trek on the back of camels and horses along the silk road from China through to Europe via Russia. Caravan means a trading caravan from those days that took about six months rather than an Eldiss holiday caravan pulled behind a 4x4 while parping fumes and gases all the way from Moscow to London. Steenbergs loose leaf Russian Caravan Tea blend evokes these age old flavours of a strong bold black tea with a definite smokiness, from the lapsang souchong.
Steenbergs is a family run loose leaf tea (and spice) merchant based in rural North Yorkshire.
Axel's blending notes:
We make this tea with a blend of loose leaf China teas - Keemun tea, Yunnan, Lapsang Souchong. It is a light brewing tea with delicate smoky aromas and tastes. Technically, Keemun tea is too modern to have been used and it would probably have been a Ching Wo tea or such like with perhaps some Kintuck in there, but Keemun is really delicious and I feel a better base.
How to make Steenbergs Russian Caravan Tea - into a warmed teapot, put 1 teaspoon of Steenbergs Russian Caravan Tea per cup plus 1 teaspoon for the pot. Bring fresh water to the boil and then pour over the Steenbergs Russian Caravan Tea and brew for 3 - 5 minutes. Add milk or lemon to taste.
These bulk loose leaf teas are sold in the classic Steenbergs resealable black pouches. This is the 500g version of the Steenbergs blended Russian Caravan Loose Leaf Tea.
NB In early 2016 this moved from an organic to a non organic tea blend due to the lack of availability of organic lapsang souchong this season. Lapsang souchong is a crucial ingredient in this blend.
