Steenbergs Audited Under BS 8555

As part of our commitment to minimising Steenbergs impact on the environment, we have reviewed our systems and been audited to the BS 8555 standard.

At Steenbergs, we are aware of our impact on the world we live in, and do the most we can to minimise our footprint.  As part of this, we have spent the summer working on improving our environmental management systems, shifting it from an informal system to a more rigorous and formal system.

So, Steenbergs now has more formalized objectives with target dates and monitors our environmental impacts on a regular basis, rather than retrospectively checking our electricity, water and waste.  Already, we have installed a sedum roof on one of our buildings and converted our lighting over to LED.

This has enabled us to be audited.  On 29th October, we completed our first audit under the BS 8555 certification scheme and are pleased that we are now certified under by Tarian Inspection under their Seren Scheme.

We have gone with this rather than the ISO 14001, because the costs and management time requirements for this appeared over the top for a micro business like Steenbergs.  I am unconvinced that ISO 14001 would add anything extra other than bureaucracy and cost to us – a bit like the SALSA versus BRC debate for small food companies.

For us it feels like a big step forward and we are very proud of this achievement.
