China five spice chicken strips

Ingredients

Serves 4
2 Large chicken breasts
100g self raising flour
½ teaspoon steenbergs organic china five spice
Batter
200g self raising flour
½ teaspoon Steenbergs organic china five spice
Fizzy water to combine above (approx 200ml)
1 pack Panko breadcrumbs
Sunflower oil for deep frying
Steenbergs perfect salt ground

Chicken strips and nuggets that are readily available in drive-thru’s and supermarkets are really nice, but lack a little extra spice for teenager’s(or teenagers at heart like me)

Therefore I have designed a “crispy” “crunchy” “succulent” “flavoursome” piece of chicken that hits all the buttons that can be tweaked with more or less china five spice powder according to personal taste

Method

  1. Slice chicken breasts lengthways into about 6 strips each breast
  2. Mix the 100g self raising flour with the ½ teaspoon of steenbergs organic china five spice and ½ teaspoon ground Steenbergs perfect salt
  3. Coat the chicken strips in the flour mix
  4. Make the batter next
  5. Whisk 200g self raising flour, ½ teaspoon Steenbergs organic china five spice and ½ teaspoon Steenbergs perfect salt with the fizzy water to make a runny batter similar to the consistency of runny honey
  6. Heat oil to 190’c (pan should be no more than a third full for safety)
  7. DO NOT LEAVE UNATTENDED
  8. Dip chicken strips one by one into the batter mix then roll in panko crumbs
  9. Fry until golden brown, remove and drain on kitchen paper
  10. You can fry about six at a time

A nice fresh green salad goes well with the chicken

Maybe a chilli mayo using a touch of steenbergs chilli pepper mix
