Sharmini’s Inspirational Steenbergs Spice Kit
We are delighted to have been working with Sharmini Thomas of Sharmini’s Inspirational Indian Cuisine for the past 6 years, collaborating on recipes, videos and demonstrations at York Food festival and generally sharing a passion for fabulous spices. Sharmini has over 20 years of experience delivering Indian cookery classes to individuals, groups and businesses in and around York and uses Steenbergs spices for their authentic taste and fabulous flavour.
During the past year Sharmini has continued to share her recipes through online classes and zoom cook-a-longs and we are now excited to partner with her for the in-person cookery classes at both the Yorkshire Wolds cookery school and Joseph Rowntree School in York, by providing a full spice kit for her students to perfect the spice layering techniques that are an essential part of her delicious recipes. For details on all of her courses, do take a look at her website: https://cookery.sharmini.co.uk
The next dates for the Joseph Rowntree courses are:
20th November – ½ day
11th December – full day
There are also gift vouchers that can be purchased for the events.
The spice kit, which contains 19 spices and a useful spice guide, includes chillies, paprika, Kashmiri chilli powder (milder than hot chilli powder), mustard seeds, dry fenugreek leaves, fenugreek seeds, coriander powder, fennel powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder, cassia bark powder, curry leaves, whole dried bird’s eye chilli, green cardamoms, black cardamoms, cloves, ajwain (bishop’s weed) and nigella seeds.
Sharmini says of her starter spice kit “They are the most common spices we use in Indian Cuisine and some we use in very small amounts but are incredibly essential to the curry we are preparing. They also complement my recipe book and my online classes.”

We have also been working with Sharmini to blend and stock her unique and authentic spice blend – Sharmini’s Garam Masala – a recipe blend passed down from her mother-in-law which, in turn, was passed down from her mother. It consists of the most expensive, luxurious and perfumed spices; cinnamon - the bark of paradise; cardamom - queen of all spices and cloves – a perfumed bud which is never left to flower.
Sharmini says “Adding a small amount along with different spices of each curry changes the subtle flavours of your exotic curries.”
To try out some of Sharmini's recipes at home, such as Bombay Potatoes, Chicken Tikka Masala or Chicken Biryani, do take a look at the recipes pagesof our website and search for Sharmini.
