The story is that Lady Ana, Countess of Chinchon, was the first European to be cured of malaria using an infusion of cinchona bark that contains quinine. For 200 years, it was the only cure for malaria. It is used as an ingredient in tonic water, for the bitter-tasting alkaloid, quinine.
