Lemongrass Stalks (8-12 Per Pack) Steenbergs details and description

Steenbergs Lemongrass Stalks is a great way to add that Thai-style lemony freshness to your cooking and create an authentic feel to South East Asian cuisine. Lemongrass is a key seasoning ingredient for the foods of Southeast Asia, and is also used, but to a lesser extent, in India and China. The flavour of  lemongrass stalks is clean and citrus-like with peppery notes, which combines well with the ginger-garlic mix that is the backbone of most Asian cuisines. Steenbergs lemongrass can be thrown into soups and sauces or ground with other spices to make the traditional Thai-style curry paste, or you can take it as an herbal tisane.  Often used in conjunction with lime leaves to give Thai food its characteristic lively flavour profile.

Lemongrass is a culinary herb that comes from the Cymbopogon species of plants, including C. citratus and C. flexuosus (Cochin grass). Lemongrass has tall, blade-like leaves that are razor sharp to touch, rising some 50-100cm from the ground (1.5-3ft). The lemongrass leaves are in tight, tufted clumps that grow each year and do not flower very often. The leaves have a faint, citrussy aroma. The lemongrass stems are a creamy-white section that yields lemongrass stalks that are used throughout South East Asian cookery, and have a lemony flavour through the presence of citral, one of the volatile oils found in the zest of lemons. For more information on lemongrass, try Gernot Katzer's Spice Pages or Wikipedia, both of which are pretty cool sources for this kind of information.

Lemongrass is a classic ingredient for Thai and other South East Asian cuisine, used whole and then fished out before serving.  Start with either Allrecipes or the BBC website for initial inspiration.  or perhaps Steenbergs Thai Prawn Curry or Vegan Laksa Noodle Soup with Tofu Puffs or an Easy Thai Green Curry Chicken.
